Translation Research on the Brain: Accelerating the Pathway from Discovery to Healthcare First Annual National Conference at The John Curtin School of Medical Research, ANU Canberra, 30 August 2010 Neuroscience has advanced tremendously in the last three decades; however, the impact of such progress on actual healthcare has been modest. Translational Science has emerged a novel branch of medicine aimed at systematising and facilitating the pathway from fundamental discovery to improved global health across all areas of medicine, including basic and clinical neurosciences. Translation can be more easily approached in some fields such as oncology in which a tumor can be taken from humans, assayed in vitro, implanted into rodents, and studied at great length in terms of both fundamental biology and therapeutics; emerging discoveries can then be translated back to humans. The brain represents a particular challenge to translational science, because it is protected by an osseous barrier that makes direct probing a challenge. Moreover, key functions of the human brain, such as cognition and intelligence, volition, motivation, altruism, resilience, mood and affect, are not particularly suitable for modeling in animals. How can translational science facilitate acceleration of translation of fundamental discovery to the clinical domain in neuroscience? The goal of the new annual national conference series "Translation Research on the Brain: Accelerating the Pathway from Discovery to Healthcare" is to bring together researchers across the full spectrum of neuroscience research from the most fundamental to the most applied in order to facilitate and foster the process of translational science applied to the brain.
