The Australian Neuroscience Society holds an Annual Scientific Meeting every year in late January/ early February.
ANS Plenary Lectures have been held annually since 1981. There are 4 plenary lectures held at the annual ANS meetings. The plenaries lectures include the ANS overseas lecturer, the ANS Plenary Lecturer, the Eccles Lecturer and the ANS Lawrie Austin Lecturer. The Eccles Lecture was named after Sir John Eccles, and is jointly sponsored by ANS and the Neurosurgical Society of Australasia and began in 1993. The speaker presents at both the annual ANS meeting and the annual meeting of the Neurosurgical Society. The Lawrie Austin Lecture is named in honor of Lawrie Austin, who was the first President of ANS and the first Australian elected to the Council of the International Society for Neurochemistry, not long after its formation. Further information about Lawrie Austin and his contribution to neuroscience in
ANS symposia are chosen from submissions made to council in the year prior to the annual meeting. For the 2009 ANS meeting in Canberra, symposium proposals should be submitted to the ANS secretary, Ann Turnley turnley@unimelb.edu.au. If you would like to suggest a symposium session for the meeting programme, you will need to provide (i) a working title, (ii) your name and contact details, (iii) a brief explanation of the subject matter to be covered and why it is of special interest at this time, (iv) the names of FOUR potential speakers and the topic each would address. You must contact the potential speakers and verify their willingness to participate if the symposium is accepted for the meeting. Symposia typically have one international speaker and should not have multiple speakers from the one institution, nor the one state. Please do not include yourself as a suggested speaker. Please ensure that your potential speakers have not appeared at an ANS symposium within the last four years. A list of previous ANS symposia is available here: Conference Symposia.pdf. The ANS will waive the registration fee and provide up to $2,500 to contribute towards the participation of one overseas speaker, however, ANS does not contribute towards the costs incurred for Australian speakers, organisers or chairpersons. Anyone interested in proposing a symposium is encouraged to discuss their ideas with the ANS Editor before they submit their proposal. ANS will also consider proposals for workshops to be held in conjunction with the annual meeting. A list of previous workshops is available here: Workshops.pdf.
For those groups planning to submit a proposal for a meeting to be held as a satellite to the annual ANS meeting, a submission outlining the satellite meeting area of research and purpose, organizing committee, speaker list, and how it is relevant to ANS should be submitted to the ANS Secretary prior to March in the year preceding the conference. Anyone interested in proposing a satellite is encouraged to discuss their ideas with the ANS Secretary before they submit their proposal.
